Shielding Your Transportation

As you learn to navigate the streets of your new home in Las Vegas, you put your vehicle in harm’s way. Unfortunately, simply taking it out of the garage subjects it to the elements, other drivers, even potholes. Take care in shielding your car or truck by choosing wisely which type of auto insurance is right for you.

Now that you’ve relocated to the Las Vegas area, it’s a good opportunity to familiarize yourself with auto insurance availability in Nevada.

Liability Coverage

Most auto liability insurance policies contain the following major parts: liability insurance for bodily injury, dealing with those injured in an accident of your fault; liability insurance for property damage, covering the damage to the cars involved in an accident; and uninsured/ underinsured motorist coverage. It’s very important for you to research the policies offered by your company. The Nevada state law has certain stipulations about the insurance you carry for your car, and it’s imperative that you are covered in the right ways and with the right policies.

Physical Damage Policies

In addition to the basic liability coverage outlined above, the most commonly recognized coverages are collision and comprehensive. Collision coverage pays for physical damage to your car as the result of your auto colliding with an object, such as a tree or another car. This coverage is relatively expensive. This coverage is optional and not required by law. However, if your vehicle is financed or leased, your lending institution may require collision insurance.

What You Need to Know

When shopping for coverage, you should be prepared to answer the following questions from insurance companies to receive a rate quote. A Nevada Evidence of Insurance card must be carried in your vehicle at all times and presented to any law enforcement officer upon request. An Evidence of Insurance Card or Power of Attorney must be presented if any person other than the vehicle owner is registering the vehicle.

Insurance companies are licensed and regulated by the Nevada Division of Insurance. You may verify whether an insurance company is properly licensed in Nevada online at Nevada Insurance Alert or by calling (888) 467-4195.

Bodily Injury Liability More

This type of insurance does not protect you or your car directly. Third-party bodily injury liability insurance only protects you when you are the cause of an accident in which other people are injured. Should those other people decide to sue you for their medical bills, this type of insurance protects you from their claims. This will also cover you if a family member living in your house caused the accident, or if it was caused by someone that you let use your car (with permission). More

Driving Record More

On the application, you will be asked about your previous driving record. More

Insurers will ask about accidents and traffic violations for any driver covered by the policy for the preceding three to five years. Drivers with previous violations or “at-fault” accidents are considered to be a higher risk and are charged a higher rate. More
